8 Warning Signs Your Arcade Machines Are Being Cheated

Most operators discover cheating only after the losses have become significant. By that point, the financial damage is done. The key to catching cheating early is knowing what to look for. These eight warning signs will tell you if your arcade machines are being cheated, often before the financial impact becomes severe.

1. Unexplained Revenue Gap

This is the earliest and most reliable indicator. If your cash intake does not match your machine payout records and the gap persists for more than a few days, something is wrong. A 3% gap over 30 days is the threshold that warrants investigation.

2. Inconsistent Machine Performance

If one machine consistently underperforms compared to identical models on the same floor, it is not bad luck. Machines of the same model with the same settings should produce similar revenue over time. A persistent outlier is a red flag.

3. Suspicious Player Behavior

A player who wins consistently on one machine but not others, a player who spends more time at the machine than playing, or a player who seems to know exactly when to play. Train your staff to notice these patterns.

4. Unusual Payout Timing

If payouts cluster at specific times of day or on specific days of the week, investigate. Temperature changes and power fluctuations can affect machines, but a consistent time-based pattern suggests a cheater who visits at the same time.

5. Electronic Device Proximity

A player who holds a phone, key fob, or other electronic device near the machine panel or coin slot. Many cheating devices are disguised as everyday objects. Staff should be trained to notice this.

6. Maintenance History Discrepancies

If machines that were recently serviced suddenly show revenue changes, the maintenance visit may have been an opportunity for a dishonest technician to install a cheating device. Log all maintenance and cross-reference with revenue changes.

7. Player Complaints

If regular customers complain that a specific player wins too often, listen to them. Legitimate players are often the first to notice when someone is cheating because they play the same machines regularly.

8. Anti-Cheat Device Event Logs

If you have protection installed, check the event log regularly. An empty log does not mean no attacks are happening. It may mean the device is not positioned correctly. A log with frequent events means the device is active and attacks are being blocked.
