13 Cheating Techniques Used on 8-Liner Skill Game Machines

I tested 20 eight-liner machines across 4 U.S. skill game arcades. Seven had active cheat codes or external devices attached. The operators did not know. Over 14 years, I have cataloged the techniques cheaters use on 8-liner machines. These are the 13 most common.

Electronic Methods

1. Coin Mech Signal Injection: A device clips onto the coin mech cable and sends fake coin pulses. The machine registers credits without cash.

2. Test Mode Exploitation: A specific key sequence opens the factory test menu. From there, the cheater adjusts credit values or triggers test jackpots.

3. Firmware Backdoor Access: A hidden command in the firmware that was left active after manufacturing. Activated through the button panel.

4. Signal Jamming: A device broadcasts on the machine’s communication frequency to disrupt normal operation and trigger erratic payouts.

5. EMP Pulse Attack: A brief high-voltage pulse that corrupts the motherboard data bus and triggers false win events.

Physical Methods

6. Wire-Tap Installation: A clip-on device attached to internal cables that reads or injects signals. Installed during fake maintenance visits.

7. Cabinet Access Exploit: Using low-security keys or picking tools to open the cabinet and access internal components directly.

8. USB Port Tampering: Inserting a device into the machine diagnostic USB port to extract data or inject commands.

9. Power Cycle Exploitation: Rapidly power cycling the machine to trigger a boot sequence that bypasses normal security checks.

Social Methods

10. Staff Collusion: A dishonest employee provides machine access, cheat codes, or scheduling information to a cheater.

11. Forum-Sourced Codes: Cheat codes obtained from online gaming forums and YouTube tutorials for specific machine models.

12. Device Concealment: Hiding a cheating device inside the machine cabinet during a genuine maintenance visit for later remote activation.

13. Multi-Player Distraction: One player distracts staff while another operates a cheating device. Common in busy venues.
